As we begin a new year, it is good to recount the blessings of the previous year. And Holy Cross was truly blessed in 2013 to see so much support for adding a new ministry to Caregiving! God has not only opened doors for us to be able to do Comfort Dog Ministry at Holy Cross, but He has ABUNDANTLY provided resources—much more than we could ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20)! Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
We are thankful for the many individuals who contributed money to this ministry, many with very generous gifts. We are thankful for people who participated in and supported our fundraisers (raising almost $700 in a bake sale and $220 at our Advent Meal). We are thankful for money from the Holy Cross Endowment Fund. We are thankful for all of it, because all this money has enabled us to apply for our Comfort Dog and be able to pay the whole cost of the dog.
In December, we had another big reason to be thankful! We received a very generous gift—a gift of $6,000, from Purina! Thanks to our member, Pam Yurchuk, who works at Purina and showed her boss one of the newsletter articles about Comfort Dog Ministry, we received money which will be used to build up our Comfort Dog Ministry Fund at Holy Cross. And we need to have a healthy fund in order to pay for expenses for the dog once he/she is here (insurance, food, grooming etc.) and pay for further training for handlers/caregivers, and any other costs associated with this ministry.
So what are our next steps? We will continue to do fundraising to build up our Fund. We will be working out the details of who will be serving as our caregivers and handlers. Lutheran Church Charities works with us in the process, helping us find the best candidates from those who have expressed interest. We have someone interested in serving as our primary caregiver, and we will also be looking for a secondary caregiver (to take care of the dog if the primary caregiver is on vacation). We will determine things like what vet or groomer we will go to when the dog arrives. We still have several months to work out these details before a dog is placed at Holy Cross.
